What's up fellas? Let's talk about why protein powder.

A client of mine reached out to me the other day asking about protein powder.

He heard from a trainer that protein powders are fast acting and due to that, you need to get your protein from food.

First of all, not all protein powders are fast acting. Casein is very slow acting, taking up to 7 hours to digest fully.

Whey on the other hand, can be digested within an hour or two. Being a fast acting protein actually makes it IDEAL for a post-workout shake. You get a quick shot of protein while your body is most receptive to nutrients to recover and build muscle.

Protein powders are FOOD, not synthetic substances or steroids.

There's a common myth that has permeated globally that protein powders are not food. I've heard it numerous times from people in Lebanon and the United States. This is completely false.

High-quality animal protein powders are just concentrated forms of food—whey and casein come from milk, and egg protein comes from, you guessed it: eggs.

They’re filtered and processed, but you’re not getting anything your body doesn’t recognize.

Do you have to use protein powders?

Absolutely not, but they can be helpful for a lot of people.

If you

- Struggle to get enough protein from whole foods
- Are aiming to maintain muscle and strength as you age
- Need a quick and convenient protein source.

Then using a quality protein powder is a smart decision.

Is too much protein BAD???

Short answer: No.

You cannot eat too much protein. Unless you have failing kidneys, which isn't due to protein intake.

Around a 1 gram for every pound you weigh is ideal. Eating more than that though, will not lead to any negative health effects for the general population.

The benefits of eating more protein outweigh the unsupported "potential risks".

- More muscle mass
- Denser bones and healthier joints
- Lower fat mass
- Better skin health
- Improved gut function
- Decreased cravings
- Increased satiety

You can have 2 and even 3 scoops of protein powder daily (if that's what you need to hit your intake).

Bottom line, eat more protein and use animal protein powders if you need them. Avoid plant based protein powders as these are very high in heavy metals and do not absorb as well.
